Members of the Circle of Sisterhood

History:

In November 2002, the Lord placed an idea and desire on a few young, availed hearts. As time progressed, the idea became a vision and a dream shared by many.

Circle of Sisterhood (C.O.S.) was founded in the fall of 2002 at the First Church of Seventh-day Adventists in the Petworth Community (Ward 4) of Washington D.C. by Dianna McFarlane, a youth advocate. McFarlane had a desire to develop a program that would assist young Christian women to learn how to build relationships with each other, and above all with Christ.

The current C.O.S. staff consists of dedicated women from various backgrounds who all share the same purpose—serving by training young ladies and equipping them with the tools to grow spiritually, emotionally, and socially in a loving, non-judgmental, nurturing environment.

C.O.S. has developed a host of mentoring and outreach based elements that are led by the dedicated mentors, who are referred to as Big Sisters. Each activity and component is geared toward enriching the lives of each young lady (Little Sister). Key components include spiritual development, a Rites of Passage Program, tutorials sessions (Math and English), college prep planning, seminars on self-worth, goal setting, and relationship building – just to name a few. Since its inception, C.O.S. has served young ladies ranging from the age of ten to eighteen (fifth through twelfth grades).

Mission:

The mission of Circle of Sisterhood is to celebrate the strength that lies within young women by sharing God’s love through positive relationship and promoting social graces.

Vision:

Circle of Sisterhood envisions the development of young women who desire a greater intimacy with God, who are able to deal with the pressures of childhood and adolescence, who posses a sense of self-confidence and a full understanding of the Creator’s ability to change lives. The foundation is set so that each young woman is able to tap into her power source making a lasting connection with God, community, family, and self.

Calendar:

Circle of Sisterhood’s operational calendar is from October to June of each year, with optional activities in July, August, and September. August 15 through September 15 is membership season for Big and Little Sisters. Applications are accepted at this time. If you have a desire to become a Big or Little Sister of COS, please check back on our website during this time. Applications will be available in PDF format.
