Title: Interview with one who watched Him Pray

Have you given any thought concerning Jesus praying? The Gospel narratives record His many praying episodes and His admonishment for His disciples to pray, but what must have been like watching Him actually pray. Why not imagine an interview with someone who had first-hand observation of Him pray until His public ministry began—His mother, Mary.

We could learn much about this by the questions we posed. Such as, what position did He assume when He prayed? Does position really matter or is the position of our heart and attention that makes prayer effectual? What about how He addressed God as Creator when He was the active agent in creation in the beginning? That’s awesome to think about. In fact, it truly is the mystery of godliness.

Miss Mary, what was his demeanor when He saw a lamb being slain at the temple when scripture says He is the Lamb of God slain from the foundation of the world (Rev. 13:8)? I know He wept at Lazarus’ grave, but what about his interaction and spirit at funerals in general? Didn’t he tell Martha He is the Resurrection and Life (Jn. 11:25)?

As far as when He prayed, did He ever pray under stars as if He was counting them as God told Abraham to do as a pledge to his faith? Did He pray after you ask a question about scripture? What about intercessory prayer? How did He react when someone referred to Satan? What about when someone was dishonest with Him? Have you asked Him what He was thinking when He saw you pray and heard you call, “Our Father…”? Did you He share His thoughts of that? Finally, how did He act after interacting with His cousin John or His other siblings, especially when they expressed doubts about His origin and mission? Oh, by the way, thanks for allow us to imagine what watching Him pray might be like.

I realize all of this is imagined, but think about it in light of the song, ‘Somebody prayed for me’. John 17 records Jesus’poignant prayer to His Father for His disciples/believers to be one. What about all of this? Jesus surely is a model of prayer. If Mary could speak to any of this and more, she’d probably counsel us to be like Jesus and pray whenever, wherever, and for whatever.
